With its special exhibition “Who am I, thanks to you — mourning and farewell”, the Kunsthalle Rostock is dedicating itself to one of the most universal and at the same time most difficult themes of human existence: transience. The presentation deliberately focuses on dealing with dying, death and mourning and shows how these experiences can be used in a meaningful way for life. Through a multi-layered approach, the exhibition aims to show different ways of dealing with loss and developing new perspectives for coming to terms with grief.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is a sophisticated mix of art, personal stories and interactive elements that deliberately creates space for reflection. This innovative combination draws attention to life in the here and now and makes it possible to experience the value of one’s own life more consciously. Particularly noteworthy is the collaboration with experts from the field of grief work, such as Anika Waschkawitz from Emotionsbewegung® and Andrea Schürgut from Feuermale, as well as the funeral director Paul Bruhn, who contribute their practical expertise to the design.
The installation by renowned artist Chiharu Shiota, which was developed especially for this project under the curatorial supervision of Tereza de Arruda, sets a special artistic accent. The exhibition will be complemented by a comprehensive supporting programme of workshops, lectures and film screenings. In cooperation with the Rostock booksellers Claudia Geigle and Elisabeth Franck, a wide range of additional literature and information material will also be made available to interested parties and those affected, going beyond the mere exhibition experience.
