For the first time, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is dedicating a comprehensive survey exhibition to the internationally renowned artist Ho Tzu Nyen with the show “Time & the Tiger”. From 21 November 2025 to 12 April 2026, a fascinating world of video installations and multimedia works will unfold in the Galerie der Gegenwart, exploring the complex realities, myths and identity constructions of Southeast Asia. Ho Tzu Nyen is considered one of the most innovative creatives of the last twenty years; as a visual artist, author, theatre and filmmaker, his immersive installations constantly question the common narratives of history, time and cultural affiliation.
At the centre of the exhibition are figures such as the tiger, which illustrate the development of Ho’s work as symbols of metamorphosis and the promise of becoming. Historical events, documentary films, art history and music videos are interwoven with mythical narratives, revealing the diversity of Asian-European influences and a hybridised present. When Ho Tzu Nyen reflects on the construction of history and the negotiation of identities in his works, a dialogue is created between past, present and future, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the artist’s multimedia world of experience in a unique way.
