The Freiberg Town and Mining Museum is currently hosting the impressive special exhibition “Suddenly Elector! August from Freiberg” is currently on display. It is taking place for the first time in the new museum extension “Silver Gate” and is dedicated to the fascinating career and work of Elector August of Saxony. Born in Freiberg on 31 July 1526, he became the most powerful and richest prince of the 16th century — thanks to a few lucky coincidences. During his 33-year reign, he left a lasting mark on Saxony with his astute administration, economic foresight and the founding of the famous Kunstkammer. Augustus was not only a Protestant ruler and keeper of religious peace in the empire, but also set new standards throughout Europe. Together with his wife Anne of Denmark, he epitomised the ideal of Lutheran princely rule and left behind a rich legacy of the early modern period with his Kunstkammer.
The exhibition offers a stimulating insight into the life, ambitions and influence of the “Saxon global player” of the Renaissance. In the immediate vicinity of Augustus’ final resting place, Freiberg Cathedral, impressive exhibits invite visitors to discover the artistic and social legacy of this extraordinary ruler. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Dresden State Art Collections and was curated by Prof Dr Dirk Syndram. It is complemented by a varied accompanying programme of lectures and guided tours that shed further light on the many facets of August’s work.
