The Alter Markt in Potsdam is much more than just a historic square — it is the centrepiece of the city and has always been a place of great ideas and passionate debate. From its destruction in 1945 to the present century, hardly any other place in the city has been interpreted, remodelled and discussed in such different ways. During the GDR era as well as in reunified Germany, the square has repeatedly been the bone of contention for opposing positions and has often been in a state of flux: sometimes a wasteland, sometimes a car park, later a green space or a building site. The original Italian-style design remains the guiding principle for many, while others favour new uses and visions.
The exhibition at the Potsdam Museum takes an exciting look at 80 years of changes and visions. With historical plans, photographs and models, the political, social and urban developments around the Alter Markt are vividly presented. Current discussions, for example on climate adaptation and future utilisation, are also taken into account. Visitors are also invited to contribute their own memories and artefacts and thus make their own personal contribution to the history of the Alter Markt.
