Philip Montgomery — American Cycles

(Name of the exhibition in the original language)

Deichtorhallen Hamburg is currently presenting “AMERICAN CYCLES”, the world’s first major institutional solo exhibition by Mexican-American documentary photographer Philip Montgomery. Known for his haunting, iconic images, Montgomery’s photographic works summarise the current conflicts and alliances in American society — from political rifts and social upheaval to moments of solidarity. The exhibition at PHOXXI shows both award-winning projects — originally commissioned by renowned magazines such as The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker — as well as previously unpublished material and the latest independent photographs for the first time.

Philip Montgomery, born in 1988, works regularly for leading international publications and was honoured with the National Magazine Award in 2018 for his reportage on the opioid epidemic. His work demonstrates a deep, empathetic engagement with social hotspots, rapid mood shifts and quiet everyday dramas. The exhibition not only offers a cross-section of Montgomery’s impressive work, but also allows visitors to immerse themselves in the multi-layered cycles of the American present — honest, unembellished and full of visual intensity.
