The exhibition “Museum in Motion — A Collection for the 21st Century” sets an example for the museum of the future with its diverse presentation of the collection at Hamburger Bahnhof — Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart. To mark the reopening of the Rieckhallen, ten large-format works from the last 25 years are being shown here, including several exciting new acquisitions that are being presented to the public for the first time. The works address the changing role of museums for contemporary art and pose important questions: How can a museum remain relevant today? How must it adapt to a constantly changing society, technological developments and demographic changes?
With impressive installations, multimedia sculptures and expressive photo series by artistssuch as Cevdet Erek, Elmgreen & Dragset, Anne Imhof and Jeremy Shaw, the exhibition opens up new perspectives on contemporary art. It highlights the importance of a close dialogue between the museum, artistsand visitors in order to actively promote cultural production and look to the future together. Innovative new acquisitions — including the video installation “Phase Shifting Index” by Jeremy Shaw — and the support of patrons’ associations emphasise the Hamburger Bahnhof’s social mission: collecting, communicating and developing art for future generations.
