The Bach Museum Leipzig is celebrating an extraordinary double anniversary this year: 75 years of the Leipzig Bach Archive and 40 years of the Bach Museum. The special exhibition “Milestones in Bach Research” takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the past and present of research into Johann Sebastian Bach and his family. The focus is not only on the path to the New Bach Edition, which was created as a joint project between East and West, but also on innovative methods such as paper and scribal analyses and the use of artificial intelligence in modern Bach research.
In addition to precious autographs by Bach and his sons, the exhibition presents original research instruments such as a historical punch card system for identifying scribes. Historical photos, letters and contemporary documents bring to life the atmosphere of the founding period of the Bach Archive shortly after the founding of the GDR and tell of the challenges and co-operation between researchers from East and West during the Cold War. Interactive media stations, audio samples and hands-on games invite visitors to follow in the footsteps of Bach research and make their own musical discoveries.
