The Stadtmuseum Weimar is dedicating a special photo exhibition to the remarkable personality Louise Ebert (1873–1955), which can be seen until 15 February 2026. A total of 50 images portray the life of the woman who, as the wife of Friedrich Ebert, became the first First Lady of a democratically elected head of state in Germany after his election as President of the Weimar Republic on 11 September 1919.
The exhibition, a collaboration with the Stiftung Reichspräsident-Friedrich-Ebert-Gedenkstätte Heidelberg and under the patronage of today’s First Lady Elke Büdenbender, takes a unique look at a woman whose life and commitment set an example in a turbulent time. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the many facets of Louise Ebert’s personality and role in the historical context of early German democracy.
