In the exhibition “Käte Steinitz — From Hanover to Los Angeles”, the Sprengel Museum Hannover is dedicating the first comprehensive exhibition to the artistic work of a remarkable woman whose name has so far only been recognised in the context of Kurt Schwitters. From 22 October 2025 to 25 January 2026, around 150 works of art and 40 documents from seven decades will be on display — an impressive retrospective that focuses on Steinitz not only as an artist, but also as a photographer and author. The exhibition is based on her family’s artistic estate, which was donated from the USA in 2018 and includes unique, often unpublished photographs, prints and texts.
Visitors can look forward to six exhibition rooms that trace Käte Steinitz’s life and varied oeuvre. Particularly noteworthy are her photographic works, which have often only survived as negatives and have rarely been shown in public. A monograph accompanying the exhibition will be published in German and English by Hirmer Verlag. The exhibition was curated by Isabel Schulz, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation — an invitation to rediscover the work of an inspiring and hitherto underestimated artistic personality.
