The exhibition “Into the Unseen — The Walther Collection” at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg presents one of the most famous collections of global photography and marks a special caesura: it is the last major presentation of the Walther Collection in Europe before around 6,500 works are donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The exhibition unfolds a poetics of the unseen through artistic works and everyday photographs that illuminate themes such as spirituality, trauma, transformation and multisensory perception.
Outstanding works by international artists- including Cang Xin, Em’kal Eyongakpa, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Santu Mofokeng, Eadweard Muybridge, Jo Ractliffe, RongRong, Berni Searle and Yang Fudong — address the invisible in everyday life and in artistic processes. New sound works by Felipe Romero Beltrán and a photo installation by artist Ana María Gómez López enrich the overall experience. An accompanying booklet provides visitors with further insights into the artistic perspectives and theories surrounding the invisible. The exhibition is rounded off by a comprehensive publication with contributions from renowned scientistsand artists, which will be published in December 2025.
