The exhibition “Flirt und Fantasie — Griffelkunst von Max Klinger bis Peter Doig” at the Kunsthalle Bremen invites visitors to take their imagination on a journey. On display are freely narrated image sequences created using etching needles, lithographic crayons, wood or screen printing and photography. The focus is on stories with open endings, dream worlds, visions and transformations — in short: images that explore and expand the limits of the imagination. The presented cycles were published by the Hamburger Griffelkunst-Vereinigung e.V., which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025 and thus looks back on an extraordinary history in the field of printmaking.
The exhibition opens with the famous graphic work “Ein Handschuh, Opus VI” (1881) by Max Klinger, whichoffersvisitorsa fascinating introduction to the world of artistic graphics. A total of around 65 works by artistssuch as Franz Burkhardt, Marcel van Eeden, Peter Doig, Asana Fujikawa, Wenzel Hablik, Anna Haifisch, Yves Netzhammer, Paul Nougé, Nedko Solakov, Emma Talbot and Heinrich Vogeler are on display. The exhibition impressively demonstrates how diverse and narrative the graphic arts can be and invites visitors to discover the magic of flirtation and fantasy with each new picture.
