The current exhibition “Imagination and Diversity. North America in the Cultures of the World Collection” offers a fascinating approach to the indigenous cultures of North America. The Museum of Nature and Environment is presenting numerous exhibits, some of which are being shown for the first time, which shed light on the actual diversity and reality of life of indigenous groups. The focus is on a critical examination of common clichés and images that are often associated with “Indians” in Europe. Visitors can expect an exciting dialogue between ethnology and authentic indigenous self-representation, which raises questions about artistic, scientific and religious freedom and builds bridges between science and spirituality in the museum world.
A special highlight of the exhibition is the collaboration with Canadian artist David Seven Deers. Every day in the museum courtyard, he creates the artwork “The Spirit Canoe” from a North German boulder as a blessing for the citizens of Lübeck. Guests are invited to look over his shoulder as he works or to chat with him around the campfire every Thursday from 6 pm. The exhibition is complemented by selected artefacts such as Mi’kmaq moccasins, Hopi pottery and historic basket plates — they provide a lively insight into the material culture and art of North America. Guided tours, also for groups and school classes, can be booked directly at the museum.
