The Kunsthalle Rostock is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective to the exceptional artist Hans Ticha (*1940), which presents his unmistakable work in an impressive breadth. Ticha, known for his idiosyncratic and modern visual language far removed from socialist realism, is regarded as one of Germany’s most non-conformist artists. The exhibition presents a wealth of paintings, works on paper and three-dimensional works that are being shown for the first time on this scale and in this thematic diversity.
Ticha’s political works are particularly influential and, alongside motifs relating to the beach, sport, music and dance, form the central focus of the show. In a cooperative endeavour, a collaboration with the Neues Museum — Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design Nuremberg broadens the perspective on the work of the artist, who moved to Mainz in 1990 and is still active there. The retrospective provides a multifaceted insight into the impressive oeuvre of an artist whose works are both thought-provoking and inspiring in their versatility.
