With the exhibition “Gold lacquer and cacti. New beginnings, upheavals and art in Erfurt. Collection presentation from 1700 to the present day”, the Angermuseum Erfurt is opening a newly conceived permanent exhibition. The presentation breaks with classical classification systems and creates an exciting dialogue between paintings, sculptures, graphics and objects of applied art. Works from the Baroque period to the present day allow visitors to experience the development of art and its social significance for Erfurt and far beyond. The focus is not only on the history and creativity of the state capital of Thuringia, but also on international connections, for example to Weimar, Venice and Cuba.
It is particularly noteworthy that the exhibition deliberately lifts artistic positions that have received little attention to date from the depot — such as expressionist works by Annemarie and Katharina Heise — and thus tells a new, inclusive museum story. The eponymous painting “Gold Lacquer with Cacti” by Otto Schön reflects the artistic unrest and innovation in politically turbulent times and invites visitors to discover the potential of art as a mirror of social upheaval and upheaval. The Angermuseum thus fulfils its role as a place for reflection, discussion and research into its own museum and collection history with renewed energy.
