The current special exhibition “40 formative years. District Capital Rostock” at the Rostock Museum of Cultural History invites visitors to rediscover an important period in the city’s history. It sheds light on the period between the end of the Second World War and the political upheaval of 1989/90 — decades that were characterised by profound changes. After the destruction of the war, a new order and social structure emerged under Soviet control. Rostock developed into the centre for shipbuilding, trade, science and sport in the GDR. The exhibition shows how political guidelines shaped the cityscape and social structure, modern housing estates were built and the overseas port symbolised the connection to the world.
Doch das Bild dieser vier Jahrzehnte ist komplex: Neben den Fortschritten dokumentiert die Präsentation auch die Schattenseiten – etwa die Repression und Gleichschaltung, mit der Traditionen zugunsten des Neuen verdrängt wurden. Mit zahlreichen Exponaten und eindrucksvollen Geschichten spiegelt die Ausstellung das Spannungsfeld zwischen staatlicher Kontrolle und individueller Hoffnung sowie das Nebeneinander von sozialistischem Ideal und gelebtem Alltag. Wer sich für die Spuren dieses Wandels interessiert, findet in „40 prägende Jahre“ einen informativen und berührenden Zugang zu einer Vergangenheit, deren Nachwirkungen noch heute das Gesicht Rostocks prägen.
