From 12 September 2026 to 24 January 2027, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to the important expressionist Franz Marc under the motto “The Search for a Better World”. Marc, whose vibrant colours and emotionally profound works continue to fascinate to this day, is particularly known for his unique depictions of animals. These paintings reflect a longing for harmonious unity with nature — values that are often lost in our modern and hectic times. Marc’s work invites visitors to rediscover this connection and gives them food for thought about their own relationship with the environment.
Franz Marc (1880–1916) was by no means a reclusive loner — although his life was characterised by this. On the contrary, he built up an extensive network between Paris, Berlin and Munich and was passionately committed to the development of modernism as an artist and critic. The founding of the editorial group “Der Blaue Reiter” together with Wassily Kandinsky is exemplary of this exchange and the collective endeavour for artistic renewal. The Düsseldorf exhibition offers a deep insight into Marc’s artistic world and makes it clear how relevant his vision of a better world still is today.
