F.C. Gund­lach — Wi­th the lens th­rough the world of fa­shion and so­cie­ty

The ex­hi­bi­ti­on “F.C. Gund­lach — You’ll Never Watch Alo­ne” at the Bu­ce­ri­us Kunst Fo­rum ce­le­bra­tes the le­gen­da­ry pho­to­grapher’s 100th bir­th­day by tra­cing a uni­que arc th­rough his life’s work and his world­wi­de in­fluen­ces. Known as a mas­ter of fa­shion pho­to­gra­phy, Gund­lach is not on­ly show­ing ico­nic works, but al­so ma­ny pre­vious­ly un­pu­blished pho­to­graphs and ra­re­ly shown co­lour prints. His ar­tis­tic work was cha­rac­te­ri­sed by in­ter­na­tio­nal al­li­ances and ma­de him a cen­tral fi­gu­re in the histo­ry of pho­to­gra­phy — from Pa­ris to New York and Bra­sí­lia to Ham­burg.

The ex­hi­bi­ti­on sheds light not on­ly on Gund­lach’s ro­le as a pho­to­grapher, but al­so as a coll­ec­tor and pa­tron of pho­to­gra­phy. In dia­lo­gue wi­th works by ro­le mo­dels, com­pa­n­ions and suc­ces­sors such as Ed­ward Stei­chen, Ri­chard Ave­don and Nan Gol­din, a pan­ora­ma of mu­tu­al in­spi­ra­ti­ons and so­cial dis­cour­ses un­folds. The ex­hi­bi­ti­on is an in­vi­ta­ti­on to dis­co­ver the love for the me­di­um of pho­to­gra­phy, its streams of in­fluence and the di­ver­se power re­la­ti­ons wi­thin it. A high­light of the 9th Tri­en­ni­al of Pho­to­gra­phy Ham­burg 2026, rea­li­sed by the Bu­ce­ri­us Kunst Fo­rum and the F.C. Gund­lach Foun­da­ti­on.
