The exhibition “F.C. Gundlach — You’ll Never Watch Alone” at the Bucerius Kunst Forum celebrates the legendary photographer’s 100th birthday by tracing a unique arc through his life’s work and his worldwide influences. Known as a master of fashion photography, Gundlach is not only showing iconic works, but also many previously unpublished photographs and rarely shown colour prints. His artistic work was characterised by international alliances and made him a central figure in the history of photography — from Paris to New York and Brasília to Hamburg.
The exhibition sheds light not only on Gundlach’s role as a photographer, but also as a collector and patron of photography. In dialogue with works by role models, companions and successors such as Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon and Nan Goldin, a panorama of mutual inspirations and social discourses unfolds. The exhibition is an invitation to discover the love for the medium of photography, its streams of influence and the diverse power relations within it. A highlight of the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2026, realised by the Bucerius Kunst Forum and the F.C. Gundlach Foundation.
