Ex­pe­ri­ence ma­gic at the Über­see-Mu­se­um Bre­men: A jour­ney bet­ween il­lu­si­on and rea­li­ty

Vi­si­tors to the Über­see-Mu­se­um in Bre­men en­ter a world full of mys­te­ries, sen­sa­ti­ons and sur­pri­ses at the spe­cial ex­hi­bi­ti­on “Ma­gic”. The lo­vin­g­ly staged fairy­ta­le fo­rest, mys­te­rious wit­ches’ hats and fa­sci­na­ting ma­gic shows in­vi­te vi­si­tors to im­mer­se them­sel­ves in the past and pre­sent of ma­gic. The ex­hi­bi­ti­on sheds light on how ma­gic has al­ways oscil­la­ted bet­ween be­lief and know­ledge, bet­ween light and shadow, bet­ween con­ce­al­ment and grand spec­ta­cle. Na­tu­ral ma­gic — such as that of the wolf or the black el­der­ber­ry — stands along­side the he­al­ing powers of stones and the as­to­nis­hing stage­craft of icons such as Ro­bert Hou­din. Vi­si­tors can im­mer­se them­sel­ves to their he­ar­t’s con­tent: Ma­gic ap­pears as il­lu­si­on, su­pers­ti­ti­on, en­chant­ment and as an in­to­xi­ca­ting ex­pe­ri­ence for all the sen­ses.

The mul­ti-laye­red paths that open up th­rough the “Fo­rest of Ma­gic” are par­ti­cu­lar­ly ex­ci­ting. The ex­hi­bi­ti­on thri­ves on at­mo­sphe­ric set­tings and crea­ti­ve edu­ca­tio­nal pro­gram­mes that will de­light adults and child­ren ali­ke.
