From 9 October 2026, visitors to the European Hanseatic Museum Lübeck can look forward to an extraordinary exhibition that presents the Middle Ages in a completely new light. Under the title “Let’s play Middle Ages — How games tell history”, the Burgkloster will be transformed into an interactive world of games for an entire year that goes beyond traditional museum presentations. By utilising typical game mechanisms such as interactivity, immersion and playful learning, guests are actively involved in the events. They make decisions, immerse themselves in historical processes, interact with characters and influence the course of history themselves — an approach that makes the museum experience emotional and transformative.
The aim of the exhibition is to promote a critical awareness of the representation of history in digital games. Visitors learn how the Middle Ages are interpreted and instrumentalised in games and gain valuable skills in source and media criticism. In this way, games are not only illuminated as a mass medium, but also as a decisive influencing factor in current social discourse. “Let’s play Middle Ages” invites visitors to experience history in a new way and to critically reflect on the significance of authenticity, interpretation and power of the game worlds — from 9 October 2026 to 31 October 2027 at the European Hanseatic Museum Lübeck.
