The Kunstmuseum Magdeburg is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025 with the jubilee exhibition “Challenged Community”. Since its foundation, the museum has been a mirror of social change — from GDR art policy and the democratic upheavals of 1989 to the international opening of our time. The exhibition not only highlights key works from the collection, but also brings them into a lively dialogue with current artistic positions, some of which were created especially for the anniversary.
Visitors can expect a multi-layered panorama of painting, photography, video, installations, graphics and sculpture. The works explore closeness and distance, demarcation and the fragility of community. In doing so, they encourage reflection on historical and contemporary forms of togetherness, question familiar thought patterns and show how community must always be renegotiated. The exhibition spans five decades and focuses on the role of the individual in society — an invitation to become part of this process of reflection.
