Com­mu­ni­ty in tran­si­ti­on — 50 ye­ars of the Mag­de­burg Art Mu­se­um

The Kunst­mu­se­um Mag­de­burg is ce­le­bra­ting its 50th an­ni­ver­sa­ry in 2025 wi­th the ju­bi­lee ex­hi­bi­ti­on “Chal­len­ged Com­mu­ni­ty”. Sin­ce its foun­da­ti­on, the mu­se­um has be­en a mir­ror of so­cial ch­an­ge — from GDR art po­li­cy and the de­mo­cra­tic uphe­avals of 1989 to the in­ter­na­tio­nal ope­ning of our time. The ex­hi­bi­ti­on not on­ly high­lights key works from the coll­ec­tion, but al­so brings them in­to a li­vely dia­lo­gue wi­th cur­rent ar­tis­tic po­si­ti­ons, so­me of which we­re crea­ted espe­ci­al­ly for the an­ni­ver­sa­ry.

Vi­si­tors can ex­pect a mul­ti-laye­red pan­ora­ma of pain­ting, pho­to­gra­phy, vi­deo, in­stal­la­ti­ons, gra­phics and sculp­tu­re. The works ex­plo­re clo­sen­ess and di­stance, de­mar­ca­ti­on and the fra­gi­li­ty of com­mu­ni­ty. In do­ing so, they en­cou­ra­ge re­flec­tion on his­to­ri­cal and con­tem­po­ra­ry forms of tog­e­ther­ness, ques­ti­on fa­mi­li­ar thought pat­terns and show how com­mu­ni­ty must al­ways be re­n­ego­tia­ted. The ex­hi­bi­ti­on spans fi­ve de­ca­des and fo­cu­ses on the ro­le of the in­di­vi­du­al in so­cie­ty — an in­vi­ta­ti­on to be­co­me part of this pro­cess of re­flec­tion.
