The current exhibition at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is dedicated to the fascinating work of Carlfriedrich Claus, an artist who spent his life exploring the depths of the human subconscious. His search for how hidden forces of consciousness manifest themselves in written and spoken language takes centre stage. In an ongoing self-experiment, Claus developed drawings and prints that visualise thought processes and affective movements. In the 1980s in particular, his interest shifted to acoustic works. Here he experimented with pre-linguistic sounds in order to capture the moments that precede the conscious articulation of meaning.
A highlight of the exhibition is the reconstruction of the so-called “sound process room”, which Claus developed in 1995. This interactive sound artwork allows visitors to actively control the sounds through their own movements. In combination with the works on paper, the exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in the artist’s multi-layered cosmos of thought and discover new perspectives on language, consciousness and art.
