How does care work in our society? The current exhibition “CARE! When love becomes work” at the Museum der Arbeit focuses on the often invisible and underappreciated care work — be it unpaid care within the family or professional activities in nursing, day care centres and social services. With historical and contemporary photographs, objects, interviews and artistic interventions, the exhibition takes a critical and inspiring look at the developments and challenges in this key area of society. Particular attention is paid to questions of reconciling work and family life, care migration and transnational parenthood, as well as the changes brought about by technical aids and artificial intelligence in everyday care work.
The exhibition is both a documentation and a source of inspiration. It calls for care work to be distributed more fairly, better paid and more highly valued. As part of the supporting programme, visitors can take part in guided tours and workshops to discuss together, reflect on their own experiences and actively engage with topics such as gender-specific role distribution and the importance of care work in the economic system. “CARE! When love becomes work” is thus an appeal for a solidary and sustainable design of care and nursing — and invites everyone to take a closer look and become part of the social dialogue.
