When Midsummer is celebrated in Scandinavia, the landscape is transformed under the special light of the White Nights. The current exhibition at the Museum Kunst der Westküste captures precisely this unique atmosphere. From 6 July 2025 to 11 January 2026, works created between 1880 and 1920 will be on display — a period in which Nordic and Finnish painting truly flourished. The artists utilised trends such as realism, naturalism, impressionism and symbolism to capture the characteristics of their homeland and link the landscapes with subjective feelings and moods.
The show offers a broad overview of the most important representatives of the time: Anna Ancher, Peder Severin Krøyer, Bruno Liljefors, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Helene Schjerfbeck and Christian Skredsvig are included with selected works. What is outstanding is that many of the 70 or so paintings come from the Fielmann family’s high-calibre collection and some are on public display for the first time. Supplementary offers such as guided tours, workshops and an accompanying catalogue invite visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of Nordic atmospheric landscapes.
