Olaf Brzeski is a storyteller of a special kind. His works are created on the threshold between everyday observation and the inner world of dreams. A fly buzzing around can be just as much a source of inspiration for him as a nocturnal encounter in a dream. The Gerhard Marcks Haus shows how Brzeski translates these occasions into film, drawing and sculpture — with a keen sense for the poetic in the seemingly banal and for the mysterious energy of the unconscious.
What is fascinating is how naturally Brzeski switches between pictorial traditions. His works take up motifs from art history without being bound by them, and at the same time they open up access to a present that is characterised by digital media and fast images. The exhibition invites visitors to engage with this exciting mixture — between humour and darkness, between reality and fiction.
