In spring 2025, four young artists from Haltern am See and the surrounding area will receive a scholarship at the Kunsthalle Burkamp to embark on a creative journey through the history of Rome. Under the guidance of Frank Burkamp, they will discover traditional painting techniques and combine them with a modern view of Roman antiquity. The participating artists Annika Stürzebecher, Julia Kalus, Lilli Pikorz and Nele Hülsmann experiment intensively with materials and colours and develop individual series of works that oscillate between archaeological traces and personal interpretation.
The resulting paintings can be seen for the first time from 28 October at the LWL-Römermuseum in Haltern am See. The works range from depictions of Roman gladiator fights with social references, mythological explorations of Venus, abstract-realistic approaches to the Colosseum to reflections on social inequality in ancient Rome. Visitors to the exhibition will have the unique opportunity to bid for selected sketches and oil paintings and thus actively promote young art from Haltern. The project impressively demonstrates how individual creativity opens up new perspectives on history and connects the past with the present and future.
