From autumn 2026, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is dedicating a comprehensive solo exhibition to the internationally renowned artist Thomas Schütte at K21. Schütte has been shaping the contemporary art scene for around four decades with a multifaceted oeuvre that has already been shown in major museums around the world. His architectural models in particular invite us to explore new forms of life in public and private spaces — and at the same time comment openly and humorously on the reality of our society. Schütte’s play with a wide variety of materials such as modelling clay, wood and textiles, as well as traditional techniques such as glazed ceramics, bronze casting and watercolour, testifies to his love of experimentation and subtle humour.
The exhibition unfolds both on the piazza on the ground floor and in the exhibition space in the basement of K21 and was created in close collaboration with Thomas Schütte. It is a new, dialogue-based examination of the Ständehaus as an institution and architecture that underlines Schütte’s search for unusual presentation formats. Visitors are invited to experience the show Tuesdays to Sundays and on public holidays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and thus gain a fascinating insight into the work of one of the most important representatives of contemporary art. The arrival at Düsseldorf’s Graf-Adolf-Platz and the service in the heart of the building ensure an all-round successful exhibition experience.
