About tine and magic — rediscovering the art of card magic

Vom Zinken und Zaubern

(Name of the exhibition in the original language)

Card magic is far more than tricky dexterity — it is an art form that combines rhythm, design and precision. The special exhibition “Vom Zinken und Zaubern” at the Schloss- und Spielkartenmuseum Altenburg takes you right into this fascinating world in which movement, material and design play the main roles. Instead of revealing secret techniques, it focuses on the visible: on playing cards as designed objects, as props of magic and as everyday cultural icons.

On display are historical pieces from the museum’s collection as well as modern designs by international designers. In combination with dexterity, timing and staging, cards are transformed here into tools of deception, but also into means of storytelling and play. Media stations with videos of the European Champion of Magic 2024, Maurice Grange, provide insights into current card art. Visitors are invited to experiment for themselves, retrace movements and discover structures — until they realise that the real magic is very close at hand: in their own hands.
