The Lübeck Painters’ and Glaziers’ Guild is celebrating an impressive anniversary with the exhibition “600 Years of Colour and Craftsmanship”: the Painters’ and Glaziers’ Guild has been shaping Lübeck’s urban life since 1425 — first as an association of craftsmen, today in a modern guise and with a traditional spirit. The St. Annen Museum is honouring this remarkable heritage with a presentation showing selected objects from the history of the office. The exhibition not only sheds light on the organisation and traditions of the craft, but also tells of religious practice, conviviality and the pride of a community that has helped shape social and economic coexistence over the centuries.
The ceremony on 19 September 2025 marks the start of a gradual modernisation of the permanent exhibition. In future, there will be an even greater focus on craftsmanship — combined with questions about the future: How can endangered craft techniques be preserved and passed on as cultural heritage? The presentation is accompanied by a digital story that makes the history and traditions of the painters’ and glaziers’ office accessible to a wide audience online and whets the appetite for more craft history in Lübeck.
